The Wombles – Christmas Party – Music Monday #4

Welcome to Blogmas Day 8!

Today I thought since it’s Monday that I’d do another Christmassy version of Music Mondays and share with you a very special Christmas album indeed!

Yes that’s right today the album I’ll be blogging about is The Wombles Christmas Party!

Released in 1978 The Wombles Christmas Party features a whole host of super Wombley festive songs from those awesome Wombles of Wimbledon Common!

If you don’t know who / what the Wombles are they are characters from the 1968 children’s books by Elizabeth Beresford, they were turned into a cartoon in the early 70’s with more episodes made in the 90s. After the success of their original 1970’s cartoon they were turned into a musical group by the man who wrote / produced the theme tune Mike Batt, various ‘pop stars’ dressed up as The Wombles and performed and so The Wombles became a band!

  • Orinoco Womble was lead singer and he was played by Mike Batt

  • Wellington Womble was lead guitar and he was played by Chris Spedding

  • Tomsk Womble was the bass player and he was played by Les Hurdle

  • Bungo Womble was on drums and he was played by Ray Cooper and Clem Cattini

  • Tobermory Womble was on Piano and he was played by Simon Chandler Honnor

  • Madame Cholet was on Saxophone and she was played by Eddie Mordue & Rex Morris

and finally..

  • Great Uncle Bulgaria was on Violin and he was played by Jack Rothstein!

The Wombles were actually really awesome, they taught children about fun ways to recycle and look after the environment! Don’t go thinking they’re outdated and old though, oh no! In 2011 The Wombles graced the Avalon stage at Glastonbury Festival and pulled in a bigger crowd than whoever was on The Pyramid Stage at the time I’m unable to find a solid answer to who it was but just to give you some context.. 2011 was the year that Beyonce, Coldplay and U2 headlined The Pyramid Stage! Between you and I, I’d rather go and watch The Wombles than any of those three..

Anyway let’s take a look at the track list on this album!

Side 1:

  • Minuetto Allegretto

  • Banana Rock

  • Wombling White Tie & Tails

  • Great Uncle Bulgaria’s March

  • Down At The Barber Shop (Singing In Harmony)

  • Superwomble

Side 2:

  • Wombling Merry Christmas

  • The Wombling Twist

  • Remember You’re A Womble

  • Dreaming In The Sun (Orinoco’s Song)

  • Womble Square Dance

  • The Wombling Song

12 tracks of pure genius! I’m not going to list my favourite tracks because frankly I think they’re all brilliant! If you haven’t heard this album then I highly recommend that you give it a listen, it’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

I bought this album myself in a charity shop when I was browsing the record stacks, I couldn’t leave it behind! It’s not one of my most played but it does get thrown on at this time of year especially when there’s a Scrooge visiting! πŸ˜‰

I hope you enjoyed this Wombling festive edition of Music Mondays! Comment down below or tweet me @MissCharlotteEm and tell me if you remember The Wombles! And Mike Batt if you’re reading this get in touch I’d love to interview The Wombles!

Merry Christmas!
