Now That’s What I Call Music – NOW 5!

This post is the fifth post in my new series all about the NOW! That’s What I Call Music! Albums.

This series is based on a book that my Dad bought me called NOW! That’s What I Call Music book! It’s a book that talks about every NOW! Album from the first on 28th November 1983 to NOW 91 which was released on 27th July 2015.

This isn’t a sponsored series but I’ve found the book on Amazon and I’ll put a link to that at the bottom of the post in case you want to buy the book and read along with me!

In this post, I’m going to be talking about the Fifth edition of the NOW! That’s What I Call Music Albums the album entitled NOW! That’s What I Call Music 5!

NOW That’s What I Call Music! Have a Spotify page and on that page, they’ve compiled playlists of the NOW Albums! I’m not sure why the NOW! Albums aren’t available on Spotify like other compilations are, my guess is copyright / licensing issues, but there’s a playlist for each album so it really isn’t a problem!

I’ll put the playlist for the album NOW 5! here, it features all the songs from the album that are available on Spotify!

NOW 5! Was released on 5th August 1985, it was released on vinyl, cassette and on VHS!

The album debuted at Number 1 on the UK album charts where it remained in 1st place for 5 consecutive weeks!

It dethroned Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms (which if you haven’t heard it is a fantastic album) and it was then knocked off the top spot by Madonna – Like A Virgin!

There are 30 tracks on this album in total but only one of them made it to number 1 on the UK singles charts! Can you guess which song?

Let’s take a look at the track list:

Record 1 Side 1:

  1. A View To A Kill – Duran Duran
  2. The Word Girl – Scritti Politti
  3. Axel F – Harold Faltermeyer
  4. Johnny Come Home – Fine Young Cannibals
  5. In Too Deep – Dead Or Alive
  6. Icing On The Cake – Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy

NOW 5

Record 2 – Side 1

  1. Frankie – Sister Sledge
  2. History – Mai Tai
  3. Money’s Too Tight (To Mention) Simply Red
  4. Feel So Real – Steve Arrington
  5. Round And Around – Jaki Graham
  6. Turn It Up – The Conway Brothers
  7. Magic Touch – Loose Ends

  5. The Shadow Of Love – The Damned
  6. Life In One Day – Howard Jones
  7. Love Don’t Live Here Anymore – Jimmy Nail

Of all of those tracks if you guessed that Frankie – Sister Sledge was the only Number 1 on the UK Singles Charts you’ve guessed correctly!

Also on this album is Don’t You (Forget About Me_ – Simple Minds which is the theme song to the 80s Cult Classic movie The Breakfast Club, before this song was offered to Simple Minds to record it was offered to Billy Idol and Bryan Ferry as well, can you imagine what the song would have sounded like had one of them recorded it instead?!

The last track of the album, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore – Jimmy Nail was originally sung by Rose Royce who will later go on to make appearances on the NOW! Albums, Madonna also recorded a cover of the song which appeared on her Like A Virgin album which was as I said earlier the album that knocked this one off its top spot!

All that’s left for me to do now is to give you my favourite songs off this album!
