This post is the first official post from my Flashback Friday series! Flashback Friday is a series in which I share with a you a post from my blog archives every Friday!

I’ve been blogging since 27th April 2007 so I think it’s fair to say I have A LOT of posts in my archives. I moved from Blogger to WordPress in 2013 and for now, for convenience, I’m going to be sharing posts from my WordPress archives, but eventually I will go through my old hard drives and pull out all of the Blogger archives too!

The post that I’m going to be re-sharing with you all today is a post that I originally published on January 21st 2013.

The post was called ‘I Think I Forgot – A Poem About Alzheimer’s.’

To date the original version of this post has 42,400 views!

This poem was published in a Poetry Rivals anthology called ‘War of Words’ at the end of 2013. If you’d like to buy the anthology, then please click here or find it elsewhere by using the ISBN: 9781844186525.

From this point on it’ll be the original post in its entirety, the only modification I have made to it is that I have added a photo!

For those of you that don’t know; my wonderful Grandfather has very advanced Alzheimer’s.

Throughout my life he’s been like a father to me and I love him dearly so at times his Alzheimer’s is very hard for me to handle. If you know me well or have been a fan of my blog for a while you’ll know that when things get too hard for me to handle, I retreat into myself and write poetry.

Here’s a poem I wrote about my Granddad and his Alzheimer’s.

I hope you enjoy it.

I Think I Forgot.

Time has altered your face a lot
You’re older than I had forgot
Memory no longer serves me right
And I run off now into the night
Running away but I’m not sure why
Is that the sun shining in the night’s sky?
What’s going on where am I please
Begging you now I’m on my knees
Help me to remember what I forgot
I think I’ve forgotten quite a lot
I don’t know who you are any more
Your face I know I’ve seen it before
It’s not until you tell me you’re my wife
That I begin to remember this life.

This above photo is of my Grandad and I in the doorway of his workshop… I was about 8 in this photo I think… I had no idea then that all these years later that very same workshop would be transformed into my office!

I think this is one of my favourite poems that I have ever written! It’s also interesting to note I guess that I still retreat into myself now to write poetry when I’m struggling to deal with things, depression might be hard to live with at times but it produces some fantastic poetry!
