This post is the ninth post of my new series based on the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die by Robert Dimery.

In this series I’m going to be looking through the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and commenting on the albums featured, telling you about albums I think should have been featured, artists that should have been featured too and just anything else I feel like commenting on!

This isn’t a sponsored series but if you’d like to read the book with me I’ll put a link at the bottom of this post to where you can buy it. This series is just something I wanted to do because I’d been reading the book and found that I had a lot of opinions!

Every Tuesday and Thursday I’m going to take one album from the front of the book starting in 1950s and one album from the back of the book starting in 2000’s, I’ll give you a bit of the albums history, the track list and of course my thoughts on the album!

In this post the album that we’re going to be talking about is Fats Domino -This Is Fats!

This album isn’t available on Spotify so I can’t put a player in this post for it, but I’m sure if you look around on YouTube you’ll be able to find all of the songs on there if you’d like to listen to it!

This Is Fats was released in 1956 on Imperial, it was produced by Dave Bartholomew, the art director is uncredited and the run time is 27:11!

Fats Domino produced more hits than any other 1950s rocker except for Elvis Presley, he had a run of 39 straight singles that charted between 1954 and 1962!

According to the book, Fats Domino sold 65 million records throughout the 1950s which is just INSANE!

Fats Domino was one of the musicians responsible for bridging the gap between R&B and Rock along with the likes of Little Richard.

I first discovered Fats Domino YEARS ago when I was really discovering The Beatles, this is because Fats Domino was a huge influence for both John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

It is said that Lennon / McCartney wrote the song Lady Madonna to emulate Fats’ style and in 1968 Fats Domino actually returned to the Music Charts with his own cover of the song Lady Madonna!

John Lennon also did a cover of the Fats Domino song ‘Ain’t That A Shame’ on his 1975 album Rock N Roll which was an album of tributes to the people who have inspired him.

Back to this album though, This Is Fats was his 3rd studio album released on Imperial at the height of his career and I personally think that this is one of his best albums too!

Let’s take a look at the track list:

Track One: Blueberry Hill

Track Two: Honey Chile

Track Three: What’s The Reason (I’m Not Pleasing You?)

Track Four: Blue Monday

Track Five: So Long

Track Six: La-La

Track Seven: Troubles Of My Own

Track Eight: You Done Me Wrong

Track Nine: Reelin’ And Rockin’

Track Ten: The Fat Man’s Hop

Track Eleven: Poor, Poor Me

Track Twelve: Trust In Me

My favourite track from this album are Honey Chile, What’s The Reason (I’m Not Pleasing You?) and Reelin’ And Rockin’

This is, in its entirety a fantastic album though and I definitely think that it deserves its place on the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, purely because I think that Fats Domino deserves his place on this list because of the work he did to bridge the gap between R&B and Rock, an influence that has spanned decades.

So since this is arguably one of his best albums it should definitely be on this list!
