Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road – Music Monday #16

Hey!

Welcome to the 16th post in my Music Monday series! If you don’t know what my Music Monday series is then where have you been?! Please click here to read the post that explains more about Music Monday and also to catch up on all of the posts you’ve missed!

The ticket I picked at random today was J9 which corresponds to the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Sir Elton John!

I’m going to say it, this is one of the greatest albums to have ever been made by anybody, dead or alive and just on this occasion if you disagree with me you’re entirely wrong and frankly you need to give your head a wobble.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is available on Spotify so I’ll put a player with the album in here so that you can listen along as you read the rest of this post if you’d like to!

Normally I’d start this paragraph by saying ‘if you don’t know who *insert band or artist name* is then let me tell you…’ but I really don’t want to insult your intelligence, because I truly believe that everybody, EVERYBODY knows who Elton John is…. How can you not? It’s Elton John.

But just in case you’ve been living under a rock, a really big rock, actually it was probably a boulder, a mountain even…

Elton John is an English singer / songwriter, he’s one of the best showmen to have ever walked this earth and he’s also a beautiful pianist.

He’s sold over three hundred million records, making him one of the best-selling artists in the world and I don’t even know where to start with listing all of his top hits, accolades and other successes there’s just so many.

His song-writing partner is legendary lyricist and writer of beautiful words Bernie Taupin, they’ve worked together since 1966 and have collaborated on more than 30 albums including the one we’re here to talk about today!

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a double album released in 1973 the album was originally meant to be a single album but thank god they released it as a double, I dread to think which songs may not have made the cut and would remain unheard!

This album was ranked 91 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Albums of all time, but I call bullshit on that list because Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend is on that list (430 if you’re interested), Marvin Gaye “What’s Going On” is 6th out of 500 albums, The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds” is 2nd and The Beatles “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club” is number 1. The list is wrong. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road should at the very least be in the top 20.

Let’s take a look at the track list!

PS I know that the last picture is upside down… WordPress has decided that this is the way it would like my picture to look, it’s refusing to cooperate so you’ll all just have to stand on your head or something. Thanks 🙂
