If you’d prefer to listen to the audio version of David Bowie – The Next Day! then you can do so by using the SoundCloud Player at the bottom of the post or by subscribing on iTunes here!

This post is the second post of my new series based on the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die by Robert Dimery.

In this series I’m going to be looking through the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and commenting on the albums featured, telling you about albums I think should have been featured, artists that should have been featured too and just anything else I feel like commenting on!

This isn’t a sponsored series but if you’d like to read the book with me I’ll put a link at the bottom of this post to where you can buy it. This series is just something I wanted to do because I’d been reading the book and found that I had a lot of opinions!

Every Tuesday and Thursday I’m going to take one album from the front of the book starting in 1950s and one album from the back of the book starting in 2000’s, I’ll give you a bit of the albums history, the track list and of course my thoughts on the album!

In this post we’re going to be talking about The Next Day by David Bowie.

As this album is available on Spotify I’ll put a player below this paragraph so that if you’d like to listen along whilst you read the rest of this post you can!

The Next Day was released in 2013 by ISO Records, it was produced by David Bowie and Tony Visconti, the art director was Jonathan Barnbrook and the run time is 50:23!

This isn’t an album I have in my personal record collection although I do have a number of other David Bowie albums in my collection, I don’t really know why I don’t have this one, I guess I just never got around to buying it on vinyl… I should fix that!

The Next Day was David Bowie’s first album of new material in ten years, 2003’s Reality was the previous album. Most Bowie fans and I suppose music fans in general view this album as the “Second Coming” of David Bowie because of the length of time between this album and the previous one and also the secrecy with which this album was recorded.

I actually remember when this album was released I was SO excited, this was the first David Bowie album to be released where I was old enough (I was 22) to fully grasp the excitement of the situation and the fact that David Bowie had made new music!

This album is a typically Bowie-esque album, it’s an absolute work of art and I love it! The album art work for this album is awesome too it shows the Heroes album cover (pictured below) obscured by a white box that simply says ‘The Next Day’ which is obviously the title of this album.

Jonathan Barnbrook the art director for this album says that the cover connotes ‘forgetting or obliterating the past’ and I really like that, especially tied in with the album title and the fact this was David Bowie’s first album for 10 years!

Let’s take a look at the track list for this typically Bowie-esque album!

Track One: The Next Day

Track Two: Dirty Boys

Track Three: The Stars (Are Out Tonight)

Track Four: Love Is Lost

Track Five: Where Are We Now?

Track Six: Valentine’s Day

Track Seven: If You Can See Me

Track Eight: I’d Rather Be High

Track Nine: Boss Of Me

Track Ten: Dancing Out Of Space

Track Eleven: How Does The Grass Grow

Track Twelve: (You Will) Set The World On Fire

Track Thirteen: You Feel So Lonely You Could Die

Track Fourteen: Heat

I love this entire album, it’s absolutely fantastic but if I had to pick my favourite songs I’d pick, Heat, (You Will) Set The World On Fire and Dancing Out In Space!

But the question is, do I think this album should be on the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die? Because it’s one thing to LOVE an album but is it something everyone should hear before they die?

HECK YES! This album absolutely deserves its place on this list, in fact I demand that you all go and listen to it IMMEDIATELY!
